You know, amidst all the constant chatter about the IPL, the Champions League football, the ATP Madrid Masters etc etc… we all tend to repeatedly ignore women’s sport. And that sucks, especially coming from me. So unfortunately, it had entirely escaped my attention until this morning that Viktoria Azarenka is playing the tennis of her life.
She is on a serious winning run after winning back-to-back titles in Miami and Marbella and is now into the Madrid Open semi-finals. The Belarussian will reach number four in the world when she reaches the Madrid final, which she will because her semi-final opponent is Julia Goerges, who may look lovely but has miles to go in her tennis. (Although she did beat World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki, but still, Wozniacki is not a convincing number one for me until she wins a Grand Slam).
Anyway, I watched Azarenka live at Wimbledon last year and remember being impressed with the ferocity of her ground strokes but disappointed with her lack of consistency. Maybe she’s finally overcome that. It would be great for women’s tennis for a true new star to be born.
Meanwhile, Nadal & Federer are meeting in this evening’s Madrid semifinals and I just can’t wait.
